How I approach things

My absolute favourite teaching has been my Happiness and Wellbeing course for psychology students which I developed over 15 years ago. Pulling together ideas from lots of different subject areas, I put together a really engaging course which gave students plenty to think about. From reading about how people coped with the concentration camps in World War 2 to Buddhist stories about making the best of things, they really engaged with the ideas. But more importantly I created a space where they could try out happiness techniques, learn from the science of happiness, and think about what worked for them and why it might work for others.

Here’s what other people have to say about my approach:

Alex’s programmes set out the how of how we change ourselves for the better. So many of us don’t need the next revolutionary system to make change (dubious as they are), we have the power and skills around us. What we don’t have is an approach to help us enact the change we want to see in ourselves. Alex will help you identify what you want to change, what is important to you (and not what someone else tells you is important), develop a way to get there, and importantly evaluate if it’s working. The inherent beauty of this approach is that you don’t need to keep coming back, unless you want to (which you might!), because you will have the tools to start to steer your own ship. I can only recommend Alex and the approach she offers. I took one of her courses many years ago, and advocate the approach to others and still use it myself – thank you Alex.

The course was easy to fit into my busy schedule but in that short time I learnt a lot about myself and where and who I want to be. It provided the time and space to practise and apply what I learned. The follow-up coaching session at the end of the course was a great opportunity to discuss how I can personally take the learning forward and apply in my day to day life after the course is over (rather than forgetting about it). It was a thought provoking few weeks of my life with a lot of reflection and opportunity to build new practices. I would generally consider myself an optimistic person but I’ve experienced a different level of positive energy throughout these four weeks and it’s continuing.

Alex is a skilled and generous coach, with so much experience and personal wisdom. She is never stuck for suggestions. The creative addition of music and mindfulness add a spiritual aspect to the learning. The tools and activities are accessible and simple. And the journey of self discovery and slow building of self esteem that Alex invites us to embark on feels rich. I would definitely recommend Bluebird and Alex.
